What is the MBTI® Instrument?
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator ® is one way of understaning personality differences. It is based on the psychological type theories of the psychologist Carl Jung. Jung’s work was later developed by Isabel Myers and Katharine Briggs, hence the name of the Indicator!

MBTI theory is based on the fact that as individuals we have different preferences. Most people, for instance, will not use their left and right hands equally, but will have a preference to use one rather than the other. Myers-Briggs® questionnaire recognises that we all use ALL aspects of our personalities, but have a preference to use some aspects more naturally and comfortably than others.

The MBTI
tool therefore looks at where we take our energy from, and choose to give it to; how we choose to take in, and process information; and how we choose to order our lives. In doing this, MBTI® puts forward 16 'personality types'. Each 'type' is given a four letter ‘name’, e.g. ENFP (Extrovert iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving).

Knowing about MBTI 'type' helps us to understand ourselves and others more clearly. With this understanding, we are better able to know our strengths and capabilities. This can be helpful in many situations, for example when changing employment. It is also used for gaining a deeper understanding of personal relationships.
At present there are two levels of MBTI tools. These are known as Step 1 and Step 2. Step 2 divides each of the dimensions of Step 1 into further 'subscales'. For more information, ask your practitioner, or contact us.
MBTI® is also widely used in business, organisations and governments. In such organisations, it is especially useful in such areas as team building, relationship counselling, management and leadership skills, communication, training and career development. On average around 3.5 million people per year use MBTI® worldwide.

It is important that the Indicator is administered correctly and professionally. All individuals listed on this site are registered with, and approved by OPP Limited, the exclusive distributor of MBTImaterials in Europe, licensed by CPP Inc.
